Attach the barbed wire to the new post with fresh wire staples.
To start the splice make a loop in one end of the broken wire and run an additional piece of material through the loop.
Pull the splice wire through the loop as far as you can then lay the neck of your hammer which exists between the head and the claws underneath the splice wire and across the loop.
Remove the staples from the old post using the claw end of your hammer.
Then from each half of the break remove any barbs for about 6 to 8 inches.

Holding staples in place with needle nose pliers is a good idea.

If there are rust spots along the barbed wire strand or multiple breaks in the strand it may be better to call your local farm fencing supplier and order a new strand of barbed wire.
Next put the splice wire across the neck of the hammer then around the side and down between the claws.
Place the hammer against the wire and anchor the loose end between the hammer claw.
Then roll the wire around the hammer making as many twists as necessary to get the wire very tight.
When you hammer in fence staples without any other tools it is very hard to hold without hammering your finger.
